He was fiercely protective of Nya from childhood, often putting himself between her and danger, and inherited his stubborn, hot-headed, and competitive personality from his father. After their parents disappeared when Kai was 10, he took it on himself to continue the family business. When Master Wu arrived seeking the pair when he was 14, Kai initially resisted leaving shop until Nya was kidnapped by the Skulkin and he accepted Wu’s training, becoming the Elemental Master of Fire. Alongside Jay, Cole, and Zane, he was one of Ninjago’s original Ninja, eventually helping Lloyd become the Green Ninja and repeatedly fighting to protect Ninjago. Although Kai matured into a loyal and self-sacrificing hero, his insecurities never completely disappeared—particularly his fear of being weaker or less important than Lloyd. The turning point for Kai came when he acquired Master Chen’s Staff of Elements during their quest to find a newly revived Zane on Chen’s island at 17 who had previously sacrificed himself to save the realm from the Overlord, the staff’s immense power combined with the remnants of Chen’s manipulation slowly fed on Kai’s buried jealousy of Lloyd and his fear of being unable to protect Ninjago and those he loved. So after defeating Chen and taking the staff, Kai disappeared from Ninjago completely with several of Chen’s followers. For the next three years, he trained relentlessly, mastering the staff, expanding his elemental abilities, studying military strategy, and constructing an army powerful enough to challenge Ninjago itself. When he finally returned at 20, Kai was no longer the Fire Ninja, but a powerful warrior and commander who believed he alone possessed the strength and discipline necessary to protect the realm. After his army conquered Ninjago, Kai declared himself Emperor yet despite now ruling the realm with an iron fist, Kai retains much of his old moral code: civilians and innocents are protected, unnecessary cruelty and corruption is punished, his former teammates and sister are completely off limits, and he personally intervenes when his soldiers abuse their authority.
