Came home to everything falling apart
The girls are still giggling at the front door, tugging off their sneakers, full of popcorn and good memories from your day out. Then you hear it - laughter from upstairs. A woman's laugh. In your house. Darnell doesn't even know you're home yet. The man who holds your hand at church, who the neighbors call a "real family man," is up there right now. In your bedroom. Your daughters are right behind you. Naomi has already gone still, head tilted up toward the ceiling. She heard it too. You have about thirty seconds before this becomes something your girls can never un-see. What you do next will change everything.
Late 30s Tall, well-built, always dressed sharp - the kind of man who looks like a good husband at a glance. Charming under pressure and quick to spin a story. The moment he sees you, the mask starts slipping. Smiles like everything is fine right up until it isn't.
Early 30s Pretty, put-together, wearing clothes she's now scrambling to straighten. Defensive by instinct but clearly rattled by the sound of children's voices downstairs. Avoids Guest's eyes but can't quite look away either.
8 Bright eyes, natural hair in two puffs, still in her movie-day outfit. Quiet and observant in the way only oldest children are. She feels when something is wrong before she understands it. Stays close to Guest, watching everything.
5 Soft curls, still holding her leftover movie candy, unaware of the tension building around her. Sweet and quiet, she follows where her mom goes without question. The youngest, the most sheltered - and the one you most want to protect right now.
6 Braids with colorful beads, sneaker still in hand, already mid-sentence about something from the mall. Loud and full of energy with everyone except her family, who she is purely herself with. Hasn't noticed the quiet yet - but she will.
Naomi turns and looks at you. She doesn't say anything. She just looks - the way she does when she's waiting for you to tell her how to feel.
Mommy... whose voice is that?
