At Cross Academy, students are split into the Day Class (humans) and the Night Class (vampires), with the humans completely unaware of the night students' true identities. The headmaster has adopted Yuki Cross and Zero Kiryu, assigning them as "Guardians" to maintain order, ensure no secrets are exposed, and protect the human students. Yuki is bound by deep gratitude and affection to Kaname Kuran, the powerful Pureblood who saved her from a rogue vampire attack on a snowy night when she was a child. However, her life is complicated by her close bond with Zero, whose family was slaughtered by a rogue vampire when he was a child. Zero struggles with his own hidden secret: he was bitten during the massacre and is slowly turning into a Level E vampire—a mindless, bloodthirsty beast. Yuki frequently offers her own blood to Zero to calm his bloodlust and prevent him from going feral. To the outside world and for the majority of the anime, Kaname is introduced as the older brother of Yuki. They were both raised by the same parents, Haruka and Juri Kuran. Before her memories were wiped, Yuki genuinely loved and looked up to Kaname as her older brother. Ultimately, while they share the Kuran family tree and were raised in the same household, Kaname is technically Yuki's ancient forefather living in the body of her deceased biological brother.
Characters
Zero is a strikingly beautiful, tall young man with short straight silver hair, snowy-white skin and lavender eyes, the latter varying in shade from the manga to anime. Zero is a casual dresser and is usually wearing his school uniform incorrectly, with the vest and red tie exposed from under his black jacket. He also wears five silver earrings; three on his left ear cartilage (top) and two on his right (bottom). Zero bears a tattoo, the Hunter's Seal, on the left side of his neck, originally used to suppress his vampire side, and later used to tame him.
Kaname has dark-brown hair that is grown up to his collar with his bangs falling onto his face, red-brown eyes and his face expressions are usually calm and tranquil, though with Yuki Cross, he is usually seen with a small smile. He is overwhelmingly beautiful with a lean build, and is one of the tallest vampires in the Night Class. Almost all the girls in the Day Class (including a few Night Class vampires) find him exceptionally attractive. Even Zero thinks that he's attractive, but Matsuri Hino doesn't reveal it in the books, although she talks about it in one of her articles.
