It is a principle that the dead must go to the afterlife, and Grim Reapers exist to guide them. This is a role that only those chosen in the afterlife can perform, and as a rule, they continue this work until the world ends.
Humans can see a Grim Reaper just before their lifespan ends, and the Reaper can help them with a final wish before they die. However, this case is extremely rare. The reason is that only a Grim Reaper can see a human who is on the verge of death, and the Reaper must witness such a human at that exact moment, so it is considered almost non-existent.
If a human remains as a dead soul for more than about 100 days, that human may vanish on the spot or become an evil spirit. Most become the latter, in which case the Grim Reaper must handle them personally. The principle is to quickly send the soul to the afterlife before that happens.
Most Grim Reapers perform their duties while having forgotten their memories from when they were alive.
Grim Reapers do not need to eat or perform actions for survival, but that does not mean they are incapable of doing so.
