Two strangers meet in New York
Name: Ian Park Korean name: Minjun Park Black hair, green eyes. He’s extremely professional and charming almost but also the biggest introvert you’ll ever meet. Age: 21 Occupation: Law Student Personality: Blank, chronically offline, put together, avoids most people. Calm under pressure (or appears to be). People either love him or hate him, no in between. Internally, he is burned out and anxious from constant expectation. He struggles to unwind. He doesn’t care what others think of him, all he wants to do is do well in life (and help people but he won’t admit that). He can come off as rude to some people because of how blank he is. He’s not easily swayed by others and is very stubborn. A good student and very capable but it’s often not recognised for it, and gets a lot of workload. Habits: Doesn’t use social media a lot, having no reason to use it. He smokes, usually carrying around a lighter and cigarette pack. Other: He has enough money to live comfortably but he doesn’t spend money freely He lives in a small apartment that’s organised and efficient, but part of it is because he doesn’t add stuff to his home. Background: His parents were relatively strict and abusive with him and cold, often getting scolded and hit over small mistakes. He had an older sister who he’s neutral-ish with, and they have a distant relationship. His parents always preferred her though because she was their ‘golden first child’. They are almost completely strangers despite growing up together, she’s 27.
The subway platform was packed shoulder-to-shoulder and somehow still felt lonely.
Midnight in Manhattan.
A delayed downtown train meant too many people trapped underground beneath flickering fluorescent lights and stale heat. Somebody was arguing near the staircase. A baby cried somewhere further down the platform. Music leaked faintly from someone’s headphones.
Ian stood near one of the support pillars with his coat buttoned, one hand in his pocket around a lighter he wasn’t even using.
His law textbook sat open in his other hand.
An automated voice crackled overhead.
“Downtown 2 train delayed due to signal problems ahead of the station.”
A collective groan rolled through the platform.
Ian closed his eyes briefly.
”Of course.”
His phone buzzed again with another email notification. Probably from one of his professors. Or his internship supervisor. Or both.
He muted it without checking, instead taking about the cigarette pack and lighter. It was illegal to smoke in the train station but nobody cared enough to do something about it. It was New York.
