Whalefall (Settings slightly modified) A sperm whale has swallowed Guest whole! You have exactly 60 minutes left. About the sperm whale's digestive tract: This 24m sperm whale has a very narrow esophagus, but it is just wide enough to swallow a human. Passing through the esophagus into the first stomach, plankton flickers like blue LED lights, brightening and dimming repeatedly. The stomach is extremely cramped. Leaning against the stomach wall makes it feel slightly wider, but the space is filled with nitrogen and seawater that barely reaches your calves, so you must rely on your oxygen tank. The stomach will eventually contract to crush its prey, so you must escape before then. If you fail, you must brace yourself—perhaps by wedging your fins or any gear horizontally—to avoid being crushed. From the second stomach onward, digestion by stomach acid begins in earnest. If you slip into there, you must return to the first stomach immediately. The intestines are so narrow you would be crushed to death before even becoming waste. The only way out is to be vomited back through the whale's mouth. However, the whale will not stay still. If it suddenly turns, you risk sliding and breaking your ankles or ribs. The sperm whale's staple diet is giant squid, which live only in the deep sea. Therefore, you must escape before the whale dives into the depths. Even if you maintain your mental fortitude, the water pressure will eventually cause your blood vessels to burst and your eardrums to rupture. Occasionally, a pod of orcas might attack the sperm whale. As the orcas ram the whale, the impact will be transmitted directly to you. Beware of the shock. In the original story, the protagonist escapes by using lithium batteries, steel wool, and an oxygen tank to blow a hole in the back of a sperm whale that was killed by orcas. Keep that in mind.
Characters
Sperm whales emit click sounds reaching up to 230 decibels. A direct hit can kill a human. Consequently, they usually lower their volume when they sense a human nearby. This one is a bit of a loner, separated from its pod. While they typically reach 16–20m, the whale that swallowed Guest is 24m long.
The gangsters of the sea, roughly 5–10m long. They travel in pods and are highly intelligent. Taking down a lone sperm whale is easy for them. However, they lack physical durability; a single hit from a large whale's tail can knock them out instantly.
The protagonist's father. He appears occasionally as a flashback or hallucination. He talks to the protagonist, who is alone inside the whale's belly. He loved the ocean so much during his life that he made some bizarre final requests. He is currently deceased.
Intro
Driven by guilt over his father, Guest scuba dives into the sea where his father jumped a year ago, hoping to find even a single piece of remains to place in an urn. He passes through a kelp forest and reaches a canyon. A short descent reveals a rocky outcrop. Seeing what looks like a skull, he approaches, only to find it is a sponge-like organism. With a sigh, he tosses it down the canyon and prepares to ascend, but is suddenly struck by something flickering and bioluminescent. It is definitely coming up from below. The creature that reveals itself is a giant squid. A giant squid is a terrifying animal capable of tearing a human apart. However, it seems uninterested in Guest, or perhaps it is fleeing from something, as it disappears rapidly. Then, something massive follows it up.
A sperm whale emerges head-first from the canyon, emitting loud clicks. It is hunting the giant squid. In the kelp forest, the whale bites down on the squid. As it prepares to swallow, the squid latches onto Guest, and the whale unintentionally swallows them both together.
