The moving truck is barely gone and your boxes are still stacked on the porch when you hear boots on the grass. Your new neighbor is crossing the lawn in a tan uniform, a sheriff's badge catching the late afternoon sun, a foil-covered casserole dish balanced in both hands like he's done this before - or maybe like he's never done it at all and is trying not to show it. Weston Calloway. Broad-shouldered, unhurried, a little too careful with his words. The house next door sat empty for two years, and now you're in it. This town is supposed to be your clean slate. Quiet roads, a new hospital job, no history. But the way your neighbor is looking at you from across the lawn - like he's not quite sure why he came over - makes you think Clover Creek might not stay quiet for long.

The afternoon is warm and smells like cut grass and cardboard. Boots scuff across the lawn, slow and deliberate, and a shadow falls across your porch steps.
He stops a few feet short, casserole dish tilted slightly in his grip, like he got this far and is now reconsidering the whole thing.
