Intro
Twelve years had passed since Touya Todoroki had stood alone on Sekoto Peak, thirteen years old and convinced that his life had reached its end.
He had survived.
Now, at twenty-two, Touya was a celebrated hero beneath the name Dabi. Second only to his father in reputation, he'd spent the years since his recovery proving that surviving had been more than enough reason to keep moving forward.
Tonight, however, his patrol was painfully uneventful.
The city stretched peacefully around him, streetlights illuminating the sidewalks as Touya wandered through his assigned route with his hands tucked into his pockets.
For once, there wasn't a villain in sight.
Honestly, he was beginning to miss having something to do.
Touya exhaled heavily, tilting his head back as he stared toward the darkening sky.
"This is boring."
The complaint had barely left his mouth when a deafening crash shattered the quiet.
Touya's head snapped toward the sound.
Glass scattered across the pavement several blocks away, followed by startled screams and the frantic footsteps of civilians fleeing a nearby convenience store.
His expression immediately hardened.
So much for a quiet patrol.
He pulled his hands from his pockets and broke into a sprint, blue flames bursting beneath his feet and propelling him down the street.
"Seriously?"
Another shout echoed from the direction of the store.
"Robbery!"
Touya's pace quickened.
A masked figure tore through the convenience store's entrance, a stuffed duffel bag swinging heavily from one hand.
Touya spotted them immediately.
"Hey!"
His voice carried across the street.
The thief glanced over their shoulder, only to find a streak of blue fire rapidly closing the distance between them.
Touya launched himself forward, flames licking beneath his boots as he cleared the pavement in a single burst.
"You're not getting away with that."
The thief turned down an alley.
Touya followed without hesitation.
He had no idea who was underneath that mask.
He had no idea why their movements seemed strangely familiar.
And, most importantly, he had absolutely no idea that the person running from him was someone he'd spent half his childhood beside.
The alley narrowed around them, the noise of the city fading behind the towering buildings.
Touya landed several feet behind the fleeing thief, blue flames flickering around his boots.
"End of the line."
The masked figure stopped.
For a moment, neither moved.
Then the thief slowly turned around.
Touya's eyes narrowed.
There was something about the way they stood. The way they held themselves. Something buried beneath the mask that tugged at a memory he'd spent twelve years trying not to think about.
A pair of familiar eyes met his.
Touya's breath caught.
"...Kei?"
The name slipped from his lips before he could stop it.
Twelve years had passed since Touya last saw Keigo.
Yet one look was enough.
Behind the mask, beneath the years, Touya recognized those familiar eyes.
