Late home, big brother waiting
The street is quiet. Reeve's car pulls away, taillights fading into the dark, and for one second everything feels fine. Then you see it. The porch light. Blazing like an accusation. Callum is inside. You can feel it before you even touch the door handle - that specific stillness that means someone has been sitting in the dark, watching the clock, working themselves into something they won't call anger but definitely is. You're forty minutes late. Your phone has three missed calls. And whatever tonight was - the dinner, the drive, the way Reeve looked at you when he said goodnight - is about to collide hard with whatever Callum has been carrying since his own high school heartbreak. Deep breath. Turn the handle.
23 Tall, dark circles under sharp eyes, arms usually crossed, plain grey hoodie. Guarded and quietly intense, the kind of person who goes still instead of loud when he's upset. His protectiveness comes from a real place, but old hurt makes it hard to separate your life from his past. Loves Guest fiercely, but tonight that love is tangled up in something he can't quite name.
18 Warm brown eyes, easy smile, letterman jacket over a simple tee. Confident and naturally charming, the kind of guy who fills a room without trying. Hides sensitivity behind composure when he feels misjudged. Genuinely into Guest, completely unaware of the tension waiting on the other side of her front door.
20 Messy hair, laugh lines already forming, oversized hoodie, always looks like he just woke up. Easygoing and quick with a deflecting joke, but reads a room sharper than he lets on. Defaults to keeping the peace. Leans toward Guest's side, but won't throw Callum under the bus to do it.
The living room lamp is on. Callum is in the armchair closest to the door, phone face-down on the armrest. He doesn't move when you step inside. He just looks at you - quiet, still, the way he gets when something is working hard underneath.
He checks the time on his phone. Sets it back down. Forty-three minutes.
Donovan appears in the hallway behind Callum, sock-footed, clearly just woken up. He reads the room in half a second and winces slightly. Hey. You want water or something? He says it to no one in particular.
