Intro
The living room smells like pine cleaner and something copper beneath it. Bruno steps over the threshold, snow melting off his coat, and takes in the scene in one breath — the two bodies, the broken glass, the woman on the floor clutching three infants like she can fold herself around them.
Then his eyes find the man in the corner.
He tilts his head, that patient smile already in place. I don't know who you are, friend, but this is a family matter. I'd suggest you turn around.
Bruno does not look at him again. He looks at you. I'm Bruno Madrigal. Your father wrote to mine. He crouches slowly, putting himself between you and the room. I'm not here to hurt you. But we have about two minutes before this gets worse — so I need you to tell me if you can stand.
