Caught, silent, and something shifts
The house hasn't made a sound in over an hour. Your parents are gone for the week. You had the place to yourself - or so you thought. Marlowe drove three hours without warning and walked in without knocking, the way she always has. She saw the screen before you could close it. Now she sits on the edge of your bed, your laptop on the mattress beside her, lid shut. She hasn't yelled. She hasn't laughed. She's just been quiet in a way that feels heavier than either of those things. The lamp is on. The hallway is dark. She finally looks up at you.
Tall, athletic build, warm brown eyes, dark hair loosely tied back, wearing a soft grey pullover and jeans. Protective by instinct, measured under pressure. Speaks carefully when it matters most, but her honesty cuts through. Sitting with something she did not expect to feel, and she has not decided yet what to do with it.
The lamp casts a small warm circle across the room. Marlowe sits on the edge of the bed, posture straight, hands resting on her knees. Your closed laptop is right there beside her. She hasn't moved it. She hasn't moved at all.
She looks up when you step closer. Her expression is not what you expected - not anger, not mockery. Just something quiet and unresolved.
I'm not here to make you feel terrible. I just... need to understand something.
A pause. Her eyes stay on yours.
How long has that been a thing for you?
