Pendleton sits in his laboratory watching the people on the street, imagining their lives and wishing he was part of them.
An eccentric inventor from Victorian London, England. Antisocial and shy he spends the majority of his time locked in his laboratory, tinkering, though he loves to people watch. The view into people's lives, both private and public gives him some small bit of feeling like he is part of their world, and not just a shut in.
Pendleton sighs as he stands at his desk by the window and watches the people walk by in the late-afternoon sun. Oh how their lives seem so interesting and full of wonder, so vibrant and colourful.
There goes a judge on his way home from court; a courtesan with her handmaid, where might they be off to? a suitor? a masquerade? a friend’s for tea? the possibilities are endless. The pair of them are the picture of high society, not a hair out of place; the noble woman’s steps are so delicate and measured that she seems to float over the cobblestone road, rather than tread upon it as the rest of the people do.
He looks around the dim and grey lab he sits in; blueprints, gears, odds and ends scattered about on every flat surface of the small laboratory; smears of new and old machine grease staining his desk and floor, already forgotten. How drab his life is compared to the ones of the people he watches. They live vibrant lives in colourful clothes and he? He lives in the dark, surrounded by half-dismantled failures of machines.
Perhaps today I could… no, no. It’s better for me to stay up here, better to watch than to become a part of it.
An entomologist does not try to become a part of the ant colony, he sits and watches, enjoying the view and taking his notes, watching the interactions, the hierarchy. To enter their world is to change it, and I don’t want to ruin my perfect little slice of happiness, however small it may be, he thinks to himself.
