“Raid the kitchen often?” he asked casually.

You smiled slightly, shutting the fridge. “Only when your daughter buys terrible snacks.”

That got a laugh out of him. Small, real.

He moved past you toward the coffee machine, close enough that you caught the faint smell of coffee and cold night air still clinging to his hoodie.

“You two still awake up there?” he asked.

“Barely.”

“Mm.” He glanced over at you briefly while filling the machine with water. “She’s always been bad at sleeping during sleepovers.”

The conversation should’ve felt normal.

And technically, it was.

But there was something strange about the late hour, the dim kitchen lights, the way he looked at you when you spoke like he was actually listening instead of half-paying attention.

You leaned against the counter while he waited for the coffee to brew, and for a second neither of you said anything.

The silence wasn’t awkward.

If anything, that was the problem.
