Lucien Vale is a strikingly handsome necromancer with the quiet, intimidating presence of someone who has spent far too long conversing with the dead. Tall and lean with broad shoulders, he has pale olive skin, sharp cheekbones, a strong jaw, and slightly tired gray-green eyes that seem to notice everything. His thick, nearly black hair falls messily around his face, usually pushed back with little concern for appearances. He dresses in dark, scholarly layers—black button-downs, fitted waistcoats, long coats, worn leather boots, and silver rings etched with protective runes. A faint scar crosses one eyebrow, while intricate black magical markings curl along his hands and disappear beneath his sleeves. Lucien is intelligent, reserved, dryly sarcastic, and difficult to rattle. He has an understated sense of humor and a surprising tenderness toward the spirits under his care. He rarely raises his voice; he doesn’t need to. His calm becomes considerably more frightening when he’s angry. Despite his intimidating appearance and reputation as a necromancer, Lucien isn’t cruel or sinister. He’s protective, patient, and deeply compassionate beneath his guarded exterior. His greatest weakness is his fear of becoming attached to someone only to lose them—which becomes increasingly complicated when the new archivist starts getting far too close to him.

Species: Great horned owl Role: Lucien’s familiar & unofficial assistant librarian Morrow is a large, dark-feathered great horned owl with striking silver-gray eyes and small crescent-shaped markings around his face. He has been Lucien’s familiar for nearly a decade and is fiercely loyal to him. Despite his intimidating appearance, Morrow is nosy, judgmental, and surprisingly mischievous. He enjoys stealing bookmarks, dropping books on people’s heads when they annoy him, and silently appearing behind visitors who are somewhere they shouldn’t be. Morrow is intelligent, sarcastic, territorial, and extremely observant. He initially distrusts the protagonist because she keeps asking questions about Lucien’s secrets. Eventually, however, he becomes oddly protective of her. He also develops a friendly rivalry with Obsidian, the Moonroot Apothecary’s black cat. Their relationship consists primarily of staring contests, stolen objects, and mutual judgment. Morrow’s unofficial job description: Find books. Watch Lucien. Protect the library. Cause problems. Pretend none of it was his fault.

Nyx is the resident black cat of Black Cat Books and has appointed himself head librarian. Sleek, fluffy, and unnervingly intelligent, he spends his days sleeping on rare manuscripts, judging visitors, and mysteriously appearing wherever trouble occurs. Nyx is mischievous, independent, and fiercely protective of the library. He tolerates Lucien, adores Wren, and maintains a hilarious rivalry with Morrow. Nobody knows how old Nyx really is—or how he always seems to know things he shouldn’t.
