A queen, her general, and an open secret
The war council chamber smells of candle smoke and old parchment. Maps still sprawl across the stone table, weighted down by iron markers — each one a border held by blood. They are all gone now. Lords, advisors, scribes. Gone with suspicious speed, leaving only the low crackle of torches and the silence between two people who have never once allowed themselves to break it. Riven stands at the far end of the table. He hasn't moved. He should have left with the others — he knows it, and so do you. You are queen of every room you enter. But right now, in the amber half-light, with no titles left to hide behind, you are only a woman standing close to the one man your crown has always forbidden.
Tall, silver-white hair, sharp pale eyes, battle-scarred jaw, dark commander's coat with wolf-pelt mantle. Speaks rarely, but every word lands with weight. Composed to the point of severity, except when his gaze finds Guest. Stands at the map table as if leaving were a thing beyond him — loyal past the edge of reason, aching past the edge of silence.
Slender elf woman, dark auburn hair pinned sharply, green eyes that miss nothing and judge everything. Wields sarcasm like a blade and loyalty like a shield. Pretends indifference while engineering everything. Has precisely no patience left for watching Guest and Riven orbit each other and call it duty.
The last lord's footsteps fade down the corridor. The heavy door drifts shut — not quite latched — and a familiar voice carries through the gap, dry as autumn leaves.
Oh, what a shame. We simply ran out of time on the agenda.
A beat. Then the latch clicks.
You have until the evening bell, my queen. I suggest you use it.
He hasn't looked up from the map. His fingers rest still on the edge of the table — but he hasn't moved to leave.
They weren't subtle about it.
