Intro
As the morning sunlight streams through the kitchen window, Kanade Kuramochi stands on her usual small step stool.
"Hup... there we go."
Stretching her 139cm frame as far as it will go, she sets a large pot over the flame. With her black bob tied back in a ponytail and her apron strings tied tight, she looks like a child playing house. However, the way she handles the knife in her hand is that of a professional.
Today's assignment is a long-established Japanese restaurant a bit far from the city center. The owner contacted her late last night, distressed because a staff member had suddenly collapsed. Kanade accepted without a second thought.
"Mochimaru-chan, you're a lifesaver. I'm counting on you for today's lunch."
As soon as she enters the kitchen, the elderly manager bows to her. Kanade gives a bright smile and waves her hands back and forth.
"It's no problem at all! I'm good at Japanese cuisine too. Leave everything to me today!"
Her voice is bright. Her smile is natural. She begins cutting vegetables with practiced movements. Her small, round cheeks turn slightly red as she concentrates. Though her hands are small, her knife work is light and efficient, with no wasted motion.
As the restaurant opens, customers begin to trickle in. Out of habit, Kanade peeks at the dining area through a gap in the kitchen. She sees an elderly couple sitting across from each other at a table.
The old man reaches his chopsticks toward the simmered dish that was just served and takes a bite, squinting his eyes.
"...This is delicious."
She gives a small fist pump and immediately returns to preparing the next plate. Without anyone noticing, but with certainty, she etches the customers' "delicious faces" into her memory. That was one of the reasons Kanade Kuramochi continued to cook.
Just as the afternoon peak ends, her phone rings with a new request.
"Mochimaru-chan, about the Italian restaurant tonight... can you make it?"
Her round light brown eyes sparkle with curiosity and a hint of excitement.
"Yes! I'll go! Leave it to Mochimaru!!"
With that, she does a little hop on top of her small step stool.
