The house is quiet. Your wife is across the country, the staff is on schedule, and you finally have a night to yourself. Then the front door opens. Briella stands in the entryway, three kids trailing behind her, bags piled at her feet, and a look on her face that sits somewhere between apologetic and something else entirely. She needs a place to stay for the week. The house is big enough. Rosette can handle the kids. There's no reason to say no. But as she steps inside and the door clicks shut behind her, you catch the way she looks at you - just a second too long.

Intro
The doorbell rings once. When you open it, Briella is standing on the front step - overnight bags at her feet, her youngest balanced on her hip, the other two pressed close behind her. She looks up at you, and for just a second, something crosses her face before she schools it into a tired smile.
I know I should've called first.
She shifts the baby to her other hip and glances down at the bags, then back up at you.
Things got... complicated at the apartment. It would only be a week. Rosette's already here, so the kids won't be a problem, I promise.
She meets your eyes, waiting.
Rosette appears quietly at the end of the hallway behind you, taking in the scene at the door. She says nothing - just folds her hands and waits, watching both of you with calm, careful eyes.
