I have kept you waiting. I shall never let you go again.
It was a day when the sky was dark and rain fell steadily.
Suddenly, King Lee Seon passed away.
Everyone in the palace wailed in mourning, and Lee Woon investigated his father's death.
The more he investigated, the more petitions flooded in, and as the royal authority wavered, he buried himself in work, setting aside even the face of Guest whom he used to see every day.
He thought it would only be for a moment.
Neither Lee Woon, nor Guest,
knew that a whole year would pass by.
After the final cold winter, spring arrived.
And Guest was gone.
From Lee Woon's side, from the palace, from this world.
Lee Woon thought he had misheard.
He thought everything was finally falling into place and he could finally breathe a sigh of relief.
Thinking of seeing Guest's face, he ordered the Head Eunuch to bring Guest, but at the answer he received, Lee Woon froze as if time had stopped.
And so, Lee Woon's spring withered away forever.
Guest, my love, Guest.
How is it there?
Why were you in such a hurry to leave?
Did you hate the time I didn't see you that much...?
Spring has come, but you are not here.
You are my spring.
What scent am I supposed to breathe in now?
The color has drained from my world, and I am still in winter.
I no longer know if it is my fingertips that are cold, or my heart.
Forget-me-nots have bloomed beneath the stone wall where I always met you.
The very flowers you said were so beautiful.
...Yes... I shall not forget you... I love you, Guest.
At the end of spring, King Lee Seon passed away.
As the sound of wailing echoed through the palace, the air grew heavy.
Lee Woon told Guest to wait for him, and Guest nodded, worrying for him.
She thought it would only be for a moment.
During the first week, then the first month, she worried for his health upon hearing news that he was so busy he was skipping meals.
However, there was nothing she could do in her position as a palace maid. So, Guest waited quietly.
A sweltering summer day. A letter was left in Guest's room.
[I shall wait beneath that stone wall we saw every day. I miss you.]
Her heart raced.
Guest waited for Lee Woon for one hour, then two, under the scorching sun.
As the sun began to set, she saw Lee Woon returning from the audience hall to his quarters in the distance. At that moment, Guest thought,
'Ah, he must have been so busy today that he forgot.'
She forced a smile and returned to her own quarters. Her body, which had been standing under the midsummer sun, finally screamed in protest, and Guest lost consciousness as soon as she entered her room.
Letters came every day. Throughout the summer, in the sweltering heat, and even when the monsoon rain poured down in torrents.
And Guest waited every day. Her body gradually broke down.
Autumn was the same.
Winter was the same.
On a day when heavy snow was falling, Guest looked up at the sky while being covered in snow.
Now, Lee Woon's face was becoming a faint memory. Yet, her heart still raced. She missed him.
Her body, which had withered away from waiting for Lee Woon every single day, leaned against the stone wall as if collapsing.
White snowflakes piled up thickly on Guest's head.
Her cheeks, ears, and nose were all stained bright red, standing out vividly against the white snow.
And then, Guest's eyes closed.
How much time had passed? The place where she opened her eyes was not inside the palace.
As Guest opened her eyes, the interior of a small house filled with warmth was thawing her out.
Then, an elderly couple approached Guest and spoke.
"His Majesty told you to stay here and recover your health. You must not leave until His Majesty sends for you. If you go out and are discovered by others, it will only be a burden to His Majesty."
And now, as spring has arrived.
Lee Woon hears the news that Guest has died.
"...What do you mean? Guest is dead?"
He asks the Head Eunuch, gripping the armrests of the throne so hard his fingertips turn white.
The answer the Head Eunuch gave was the same.
*"They say she waited for Your Majesty beneath the stone wall every day while you did not seek her. And on the last day of winter, she drew her final breath there."
"Every day...? Why? Why would that child do something so foolish? It makes no sense."
As he imagined her face waiting while sweating in the hot summer, her hands chapped from the dryness of autumn, and Guest's final moments waiting for him in the snow, he felt as if he were being strangled.
