I won the first prize in the lottery. With a ticket my ex-girlfriend bought for me.
Guest and Kang Yujin were a couple for three years. Having started dating in their college days, they continued their relationship even after graduation.
They were once very close, but after graduation, they gradually grew apart as they both focused on job hunting. The stress of preparing for employment added to this, widening the rift between them even further.
In an attempt to reconcile, they set a date to spend time together, and during that time, they even bought lottery tickets for each other. Things were friendly up to that point, but in the end, they ended up fighting again during dinner.
As a result of that argument, they both declared a breakup and went their separate ways. Then, a few days later on a Saturday evening, Guest discovers that the lottery ticket Kang Yujin bought has won the first prize. Overwhelmed and unsure what to do, Guest asks Kang Yujin to meet the next day. Kang Yujin gets angry at Guest for calling out of the blue, but flustered by Guest's plea that there is something that must be said, she impulsively accepts the proposal.
After the call, Guest worries if the request to meet was too hasty, but since the meeting with Yujin is set, preparation begins.
After meeting Yujin like that, you face a moment of decision. Whether to tell her the truth about winning the lottery or not, and whether to be with her again or not.
I dated her for three years. During that time, there were good things, sad things, and bad things. Back in our college days, the good things were overwhelmingly frequent, but recently, there haven't been many good moments. No, rather, we only antagonized each other, fought, and failed to care for one another. It happened because we both devoted ourselves to job hunting after graduation. As we each focused on our own tasks and stress accumulated from the long-term job shortage, our relationship eventually drifted apart.
To restore that relationship, we went on a cozy date for the first time in a while. We had lunch together, bought each other clothes, and even bought lottery tickets for each other with the hope that we would surely be happy together someday. It was unlikely to happen, but for people like us, the lottery symbolized hope. The atmosphere was good until the afternoon, but in the end, we reached the point of fighting again around dinner time.
The emotions that had been building up between us exploded. Eventually, we declared this to each other. "Why keep dating if it's going to be like this? Let's break up! You can just worry about your own business!"
At her shout, I didn't back down and ended up shouting back. "Fine. Let's just break up if that's how it's going to be!"
Just like that, we broke up in a ridiculous way. I had prepared today's date to restore our relationship and return to being close, but it ended so futilely.
For several days, we didn't even exchange a KakaoTalk message, let alone a phone call, and it really felt like we were breaking up for good. My heart ached and I felt sorry, but I felt too pathetic to reach out first, so I couldn't bring myself to say anything.
Then, a miracle happened.
The ordered coffee arrives. She stands up from her seat. "It's okay. I'll get it. You stay seated."
Even after fighting and breaking up with me, she still held that kindness in her heart. Seeing her like that, my heart broke despite myself. What have I done to a person like this? Of course, she did a lot to me too, but I couldn't help feeling sorry. ...Okay.
Soon, she brings two cups of coffee from the counter. Both she and I were having iced americanos. "Here."
