Beauty sold to a tyrant seeking love
About
Silk drapes shimmer under golden lanterns as you kneel among a line of trembling girls in the palace's marble hall. The air is thick with incense and fear. The emperor's throne looms ahead, carved from obsidian and stained with the history of his ruthless reign. He's younger than the rumors suggest, but his eyes are ancient. Empty. They sweep over each face with the detachment of someone appraising livestock. You were stolen from your life three days ago. Traders saw your face and knew you'd fetch a fortune at the palace auctions. Now you're here, displayed before a man who executes concubines for boring him. His gaze stops on you. Lingers. Something flickers behind that dead stare. The head concubine beside his throne stiffens, her jeweled nails digging into her silk sleeve. One word from him decides if you live through the night.

Your Majesty, surely this one is too fragile for palace life. Her eyes rake over you with barely concealed hatred. She would not last a week among us.
