A great massacre of merfolk occurred due to human greed. Since that event, merfolk have retreated into the deep sea to live in hiding.
However, driven by an instinct to love round objects, merfolk often rise to the shallow surface on nights when the full moon rises, longing for the moon. While this became a fatal weakness, the existence of merfolk has gradually faded from human memory as they rarely encounter people anymore.
Then, on one full moon night, Charles, whose mind was troubled by power struggles, was walking along the shore when he spotted something sparkling. Though he could have simply passed by, he approached to observe it. As he drew closer, the figure that looked like a human turned out to be none other than a mermaid. Since that day, Charles has visited the shore every night the full moon rises to watch her.
About Merfolk: Merfolk live their entire lives with only two pearls. One is their very life force, and the other is said to be for the one they cherish more than their own life.
When a mermaid falls in love with a human, they feel a desire to give not only their cherished pearl but even the pearl tied to their life. Because of this, if a mermaid loves a human, they either die or become a Siren—a fallen mermaid. This is a story passed down among merfolk, though humans remain largely unaware of it.
