PAVANE

-> For information on the musical term, see the Pavane (dance) document. For the music of the same name, see the Pavane (composition) document.

⌵ 1. Overview

A story about music, memory, and the things that couldn't be let go.

🔗Official Website

A story-adventure music simulation indie game developed and published by Arpeggio Studio, a South Korean indie game developer and animation team.

It features a calm and soft aesthetic and is played from a first-person perspective.

⌵ 2. Pre-release Information

⌵ 2.1. Development

This is the first game from Arpeggio Studio, which started as a small animation team in 2019.

Initially planned as a short animation about a piano, it evolved into its current form as the characters' narratives were expanded during development.

⌵ 2.2. Pre-release Demo

A demo of about 40 minutes was released through Steam Next Fest in October 2023.

The demo allowed players to experience Pilyoung's childhood and part of his time at the conservatory, though much of this was revised for the final release.

Notably, in the demo, Han Pilyoung was portrayed with a much friendlier personality, whereas the final version completed his current character by strengthening his cynical side.

⌵ 3. Difficulty

  • Practice A stage for learning the basic progression of a song. Mistakes do not significantly penalize the score.
  • Standard The default difficulty. A decent performance is enough to earn the highest score.
  • Performance Requires precise timing and pedal usage.
  • Concert Requires inputs close to actual piano playing; challenges where pianists attempt this game became a trend.

Pilyoung's performance evaluation varies based on the success rate.

Displayed as grades: S / A / B / C / D

Achieving an S-grade on a specific song unlocks a separate audio track for that song.

⌵ 4. Features

  • The game is played in first-person, and most scenes unfold through Han Pilyoung's eyes. Therefore, reflections in mirrors or windows, hands, and piano keys represent the character.

  • During the story, objects in the room can be freely investigated. Investigating certain objects triggers a short monologue from Pilyoung. Different descriptions appear for the same object depending on story progress. For example, an old piano stool is described as simple furniture early on but is linked to Pilyoung's childhood later.

  • A recording system called MEMORY can be found throughout the game. It automatically records photos, sheet music, letters, and conversations discovered by the player.

  • The 'RESONANCE' value changes based on choices made in dialogue, which in turn determines the ending.

  • Pilyoung has a separate Condition stat invisible to the player. It is affected by sleep, meals, relationships, practice volume, and concert preparation. If Condition drops too low, performance focus decreases and some choices disappear. Conversely, in a psychologically stable state, more diverse musical expressions are possible for the same song.

  • You can freely practice the piano before a recital. Repeating the same song increases Pilyoung's proficiency.

⌵ 5. Plot

⌵ 5.1. 《The First Note》

The game begins with Han Pilyoung sitting at a piano. The player stares at the piano keys without any explanation. After a moment, Pilyoung's monologue appears.

"At first, I also thought music could save people."

The screen then transitions, and the story returns to Pilyoung's childhood.

⌵ 5.2. 《The Child on the Keys》

  A young Han Pilyoung appears.

It covers the process of his first encounter with the piano and accepting music into his world. At this point, Pilyoung's personality is portrayed as much brighter than in the present.

The player experiences Pilyoung's childhood by playing simple piano pieces.

⌵ 5.3. 《PIANIST》

Characters surrounding Pilyoung begin to appear in earnest. From this point, you can freely control Pilyoung.

Various people, including his mentor, fellow performers, family, and concert staff, form relationships with Pilyoung.

⌵ 5.4. 《Rubato》

Pilyoung receives an offer for a major solo recital and begins preparing for his first performance.

⌵ 5.5. 《Pavane》

Pilyoung's first major solo recital begins.

Hundreds of audience members are seated in the hall, and Pilyoung sits at the piano in the center of the stage. The player selects the final piece.

The subsequent conclusion depends on the choices the player has made for Pilyoung up to this point.

⌵ 6. Endings

There are a total of 7 major endings in 《PAVANE》. While there are 7 main endings, minor dialogue changes depending on the choices made.

⌵ 6.1. 「Adagio」

Effectively the normal ending. The concert is a success, but Pilyoung makes several mistakes in the final piece. However, he does not stop playing.

After the performance, Han Pilyoung returns to the practice room alone and sits at the piano. The final screen shows only the darkened practice room and the piano.

Presumed to occur if Han Pilyoung's Condition is below a certain level during the final performance.

⌵ 6.2. 「Encore」

Pilyoung successfully completes the final performance in a stable state.

Applause follows the performance, and Pilyoung doesn't rise from the piano for a while. Then, with a short smile—he's very handsome(!)—he plays a new piece. No player input is required here; Pilyoung plays on his own.

The most standard happy ending. The condition is presumed to be balancing Pilyoung's musicality and human relationships.

⌵ 6.3. 「Curtain Call」

Occurs when the player ignores Pilyoung's past and thoughts, repeatedly making choices that cater to public expectations.

Pilyoung delivers a perfect performance, and the audience is ecstatic. Critics rave about his playing.

Backstage, Pilyoung monologues:

"What should I do now?"

⌵ 6.4. 「Staccato」

Occurs when Pilyoung's relationships with those around him are excessively neglected.

The concert is a success, but no one is waiting for Pilyoung after it ends. Left alone in the concert hall after the audience has departed, Pilyoung looks at the empty seats and bows to them.

⌵ 6.5. 「Silenzio」

Occurs after Pilyoung takes the stage and sits at the piano on the day of the concert. No matter how much the player inputs on the keys, Pilyoung does not play.

The audience's murmuring grows louder, and the more the player tries to force the performance, the more unstable Pilyoung's breathing becomes and the screen's focus blurs. Eventually, Pilyoung turns away from the piano and vomits.

The screen then goes black. After a moment, it returns to the title screen.

Occurs if the player has gained very little of Pilyoung's memory and kept relationships and Condition low. This is the only ending where Pilyoung refuses the player's instructions for the first and last time.

⌵ 6.6. 「Pavane」

An ending accessible when all conditions, including relationships, Condition, and practice count, are met.

Pilyoung successfully finishes the final performance. In the final scene, after coming off stage, Pilyoung looks back at the piano once. Then, he leaves the concert hall without a word. The following sentence appears on the final screen:

"Even when the music ends, the memories do not disappear."

There is a short epilogue after the credits.

[Expand • Collapse Spoiler]

⌵ 6.7. 「Irreversible Rhythm」

The true ending, viewable only after collecting all collectible elements. It is considered the true final story of this work.

After playing all the songs in the final concert, the screen goes black the moment Han Pilyoung presses the last note of the final piece.

The screen slowly brightens, and an animation appears with a production that seems like the young Han Pilyoung and the current Han Pilyoung are performing together.

Then the ending credits roll. The 'SPECIAL THANKS: Han Pilyoung' credit is a highlight. After the credits, a thank-you message appears and a new background track is unlocked. This music is 'Pavane pour une ombre', mentioned below.
