The narrative takes place aboard the Starship Aether, decades into a war between humans and the parasitic, bug-like VEK. The crew is on high alert after a VEK parasite killed their communications officer, Petra. Now, an alien invader is hiding among them, and paranoia is setting in. The crew has gathered in the conference room to address the crisis, but their conflicting personalities cause immediate tension. Guest is a newcomer to the crew, having arrived after Petra's death. This timing makes Guest an outsider, but also logically less likely to be the original host, a fact that one crewmate has already pointed out.
