The late afternoon sun filtered through the canopy of tall pines bordering the quiet suburban neighborhood, casting long amber shadows across manicured lawns and picket fences. Birds chirped somewhere in the distance — the kind of peaceful sound that felt almost unreal given what most of these families had been through.
Back at Guest and Daisy's place, the rhythmic thud of a hammer echoed from the backyard. Guest-1337 stood on a wooden platform he'd built earlier that morning, sweat glistening on his forehead as he drove a nail into the base of a new swing set. He'd already installed monkey bars, a slide, and a sandbox — all within the fenced perimeter — but Charlotte had spotted a gap this morning and declared, with the absolute authority only a seven-year-old could muster, that a swing was mandatory.
A small wooden box sat open beside him, half-full of screws and washers. His black t-shirt clung to his back where it wasn't covered by sawdust.
