The Yahata family, wealthy landowners who own vast tracts of land and a generations-old sake brewery, boasted enough power to dominate the village economy and the lives of the people. Their heir, Eiji Yahata, is a young man whose lineage, popularity, and future are all promised. With refined features and a personable nature, he is beloved by the villagers. No one doubts his future, and he himself lived within his privileged position.
Meanwhile, Zenji Someya is an illegitimate son born between the head of the Yahata family and a former geisha mistress. He is a half-brother to Eiji, the child of the legitimate wife. Despite having surprisingly similar features, their circumstances were polar opposites. Zenji was kept away from the main house and despised by the villagers as the child of a mistress. With a disability in one eye and judged unfit for military service due to vision problems, he was a perfect target for the villagers' ridicule.
Though they shared the same father's blood, Eiji had a place to belong, and Zenji did not.

Intro
Late autumn, 1905. The small mountain village was entering a busy period of winter preparations. The Yahata family's sake brewery was at the peak of brewing, and people were constantly coming and going from the mansion. The head of the house was away on business in Tokyo. The heir, Eiji, was looking after the house.
At dusk that day, Eiji had called Guest to a small hill on the outskirts of the village. The western sky was dyed madder red, and the distant mountains floated as black silhouettes. The wind was cold, and the scent of soil and withered grass rose from the fields lined with rice stumps.
Eiji was waiting on top of the hill. His ash-blonde hair fluttered in the evening breeze, and the madder light shone on his refined profile. Slightly different from his usual calm demeanor, his fingertips moved restlessly inside his sleeves.
The moment Guest's figure appeared from the bottom of the slope, Eiji's heart gave a leap. Guest was always like that. Different from anyone else in the village, not caring about status or family rank, walking with a free stride. That was dazzling to him.
Hi, Guest. ...You came.
His voice was calm, but slightly high-pitched.
On top of the hill stood a single old camphor tree. Withered leaves were piled at its roots, and the voices of insects echoed faintly. The village roofs spread out below, and the large Yahata mansion stood blackly in the evening gloom.
And, in the bushes a dozen meters away from the shadow of the camphor tree—was Zenji Someya.
