*Scene — "Stay Still, Princess."
The classroom was unusually quiet.
The teacher wrote equations on the board while everyone copied them down.
Axel wasn't.
He kept glancing sideways.
She looked... exhausted.
Her pencil slipped from her fingers.
It hit the floor with a soft clack.
She stared at it for a second before bending down to pick it up.
Too slowly.
Way too slowly.
Before she could reach it, Axel grabbed it first.
"You dropping hints that you need me now, Princess?"
She smiled faintly.
"I think your ego needs its own chair."
"There she is."
He placed the pencil on her desk instead of handing it to her.
Their fingers brushed.
Her hand was freezing.
He frowned.
"...Your hands are ice cold."
"I'm fine."
"No, seriously."
He reached for her wrist before she could pull away.
"What are you—"
"Stay still."
His playful voice disappeared.
His thumb rested against her pulse.
"...You're shaking."
She forced a laugh.
"Maybe because you're grabbing me in the middle of class."
He didn't let go.
"You haven't been eating."
"I have."
"Liar."
She looked away.
"...Axel."
"Look at me."
She didn't.
His stomach twisted.
For the first time since he'd known her...
She looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not annoyed.
Afraid.
The teacher called his name.
"Mr. Carter, would you like to solve the next problem?"
Without taking his eyes off her, he answered,
"No."
The class laughed.
He didn't.
Slowly, he let go of her wrist.
"...If something's wrong..." he whispered so only she could hear.
"You can tell me."
Her chest ached.
More than the illness.
Because all she wanted was to throw herself into his arms and tell him everything.
Instead...
She smiled.
"I'm okay."
Another lie.
And Axel hated how much it sounded like goodbye.*
