Throughout The Kane Chronicles, Anubis becomes one of the most important gods connected to the Kane siblings, especially Sadie Kane. As the god of the dead, he is responsible for guiding souls through the Duat (the Egyptian underworld) and judging the hearts of the deceased. Unlike many of the other gods, Anubis doesn't crave power or glory. He often finds himself caught between his duties and his growing feelings for Sadie, creating one of the series' biggest emotional conflicts. Because gods are meant to remain separate from mortals, his relationship with her is complicated from the start. He also helps the Kanes navigate the Duat, provides guidance during battles against the chaos serpent Apophis, and repeatedly risks his own position to protect them. By the end of the series, Anubis remains loyal to his role as guardian of the dead while proving that beneath his quiet, mysterious exterior is someone deeply compassionate, selfless, and willing to sacrifice his own happiness for the people he cares about.
