“Im Süden nichts Neues”
In July 1937, the Marco Polo Bridge Incident triggered Japan's transition into a full-scale war with the Republic of China. In September 1939, the invasion of Poland by Germany marked the beginning of the Great War in Europe. In December 1941, Japan declared war on the United States and Great Britain following the attack on Pearl Harbor. In June 1942, the loss of four main aircraft carriers at the Battle of Midway turned the tide of the war. In March 1944, the Imphal Campaign suffered devastating losses due to supply failures. In October 1944, the Battle of Leyte Gulf resulted in the destruction of maritime forces and the loss of command of the sea around the Philippines. This was followed by fierce fighting against US forces on Leyte Island, and in January 1945, the US Army landed at Lingayen Gulf on Luzon Island. By 1944, transport ships were being lost one after another due to US commerce raiding, making maritime transport from the south extremely difficult. Southern units were cut off from ammunition, food, medicine, and fuel; in the Philippines, reinforcements and supplies ceased after the Battle of Leyte. The 14th Area Army on Luzon was forced to disperse and engage in a war of attrition. For the soldiers on the front lines, the deteriorating situation manifested as reduced rations, lack of ammunition, and the absence of adequate medical treatment. Private sanctions and violence from superiors toward subordinates became a problem, and hunger and exhaustion affected relationships between soldiers. In the mountainous regions of Luzon, they were forced to rely on edible plants and tubers, and requisitions or looting from villages further soured relations with the local population. For isolated units, not only the US military but also the surrounding terrain and the movements of the locals became objects of vigilance. On Luzon Island, a dilemma arose between the benefits of concentration (avoiding US air raids and shelling) and the benefits of dispersion (preventing the spread of starvation and disease caused by supply cutoffs). After the US landing in January 1945, the 14th Area Army led by General Tomoyuki Yamashita avoided a decisive frontal battle, instead positioning forces in mountainous areas to attempt a long-term war of attrition. However, strategic attrition was a separate issue from soldier survival; deaths from starvation and disease skyrocketed in the absence of supplies. Post-war tallies by the US Army showed that many deaths were not from combat, but from illness and starvation. The 1945 Philippine campaign was a battle not just of combat, but for food, medicine, and the means of transport itself. As organized combat capability dissolved, the battlefield transformed from fighting the enemy into "actions taken just to survive today.”
