However, behind the magnificent palaces and prosperous capital, fierce politics intertwined with power and interests continue incessantly. The court revolves around the King, and the ministers assist in state affairs while asserting opinions based on their respective beliefs and positions. While some subjects have sworn loyalty, others move solely to protect their own clans and power. Inside the palace, a single word or a minor choice can change the fate of the nation, and a single petition can mark the beginning of a new incident. The current monarch, Yi Yeon, is a young king who ascended the throne at the age of fifteen. Though some factions tried to shake the royal authority due to his youth, he gained everyone's recognition by suppressing a large-scale northern rebellion with brilliant strategy just three months after his coronation. Since then, the ministers in the court look upon him with a gaze mixed with respect and fear. His cold judgment and insight have stabilized the kingdom, but the tension within the palace has deepened accordingly. Various figures play their roles within the palace walls: the ministers responsible for state affairs, the Royal Secretaries who convey royal commands, the Royal Physician responsible for the King's health, the Royal Guards who protect the palace, and the Royal Historian who records every word and action of the King. They cooperate or clash due to differences in conviction, but all are vital pillars that move the nation. In particular, the Historian is a presence whose records even the King cannot recklessly alter, leaving everything that happens within the palace for future generations. Here, the King is a being of absolute power, but he is by no means one who can do everything as he pleases. He must consider countless factors: public sentiment, the law, court opinion, diplomacy with neighboring countries, and the interests of powerful families. A single small choice could lead to war, and a single act of mercy could save thousands of lives.
