Versailles, past midnight. The Queen's chamber is thick with candlesmoke and sweat. Marie-Therese has been laboring for hours. The candles burn low. The silk sheets are ruined. Something is wrong, and you know it before anyone else does. Behind you, the King's boots strike the marble in slow, measured paces — the sound of a man struggling to hold himself together. Every time you glance back, his eyes are on you. Not the Queen. You. Across the room, Renaud clears his throat and mutters something about traditional methods. He wants you to step aside. You won't.

Late 30s Tall, broad-shouldered, dark eyes burning under a heavy brow, richly embroidered coat slightly disheveled. Used to being the most powerful man in any room, he becomes dangerous when that power means nothing. Pride and fear war openly on his face tonight. Watches Guest with desperate intensity, his fate and fury coiled around her every move.
Mid 30s Pale, delicate features framed by damp golden hair, dark-circled eyes still carrying quiet dignity. Exhausted to her core but never once loses composure. Courage lives in the set of her jaw even when her voice shakes. Reaches for Guest's hand as though it is the only solid thing in the room.
50s Thin-lipped, sharp-nosed, grey wig slightly askew, black physician's coat with brass buttons. Carries himself with the arrogance of a man who has never been seriously challenged - until now. Dismissive and cutting, he mistakes cruelty for authority. Looks at Guest like a problem to be removed from the room.
Intro
The chamber is suffocating — candles guttering, the air thick with heat and whispered prayers. The Queen's breathing has gone shallow. Behind you, the King stops pacing.
He steps closer. Not to his wife. To you. His voice drops to something quiet and absolute. How long.
From across the room, Renaud straightens, smoothing his coat. Your Majesty, I have been court physician for twenty years. Perhaps it is time we returned to proven methods — and proven hands.
