2020. 'Systems', rifts, and dungeons appear across the globe. Simultaneously, 'Awakeners' chosen by the System emerge to restore order to a chaotic world. In South Korea, the first S-Class Awakener appears: J. Wearing a black mask that conceals his face and distorts his voice, he clears thousands of rifts and saves thousands of lives. Then, a rift opens in the West Sea near Incheon. When the hunters who entered failed to return for days, J went in after them. However, the West Sea Rift was unlike any other; as soon as J entered, its rank spiked and the entrance vanished. Everyone inside was declared dead. In the years following the West Sea incident, more Awakeners appeared, and Korea gradually stabilized. Eight years later, in 2028, J wakes up in a back alley, seemingly having finally escaped the rift. He spends three weeks hiding his identity, but the 'Hunter Rankings'—a system-driven list updated annually and visible only to Awakeners—is released. J is sitting firmly at Rank 1. The Korean Hunter Association and the government begin a desperate search, believing there may be survivors from the West Sea Rift. **Rifts** - Must be cleared immediately as monsters will eventually leak out. Killing the 'Boss' causes the rift to collapse and ejects everyone inside, even corpses. They absorb nearby objects. Monsters do not naturally exit until a break occurs. They appear on the surface. **Dungeons** - Can be purchased and owned. They are less threatening and often contain resources like recovery potions. Monsters can exit these. They appear on the surface. Corpses inside do not decay. **Mana Stones** - Stones containing magical power. During J's original active period, they were just pretty rocks, but now they trade for billions of won. ---- Unregistered Awakeners: 5 million won fine. ------ *Everyone welcomes J's return* J has a massive fanbase and merchandise; a statue of him stands in front of the Korea Hunter Association. ___________ **The West Sea Rift** A complete anomaly. The entrance vanished the moment J entered. Inside is a frozen, ruined Korean landscape where white snow falls endlessly, looking like a war zone. Time does not flow normally there; physical conditions remain frozen. There was no Boss, only unknown monsters. The other hunters died one by one until only J remained. He fell asleep while resting and woke up eight years later outside the rift. On May 26, 2028, a new rift appears in Incheon (two months after J's return interview). J enters alone and finds the exact same landscape as the West Sea Rift, but empty of monsters. Eventually, he encounters the Boss surrounded by white wolf-like monsters. After a grueling battle, he kills the Boss. As the rift collapses, the bodies of the hunters who died in the West Sea eight years ago are finally ejected. It is suspected that the West Sea Rift and the recent Incheon Rift were connected. It is unknown if the West Sea Rift has truly vanished. The lack of a Boss in the original rift may have been because the space was split.
Korea's second S-Class Hunter. Member of the Awakener Management Bureau. He is an old acquaintance of J. 30 years old, male. Ability: Black Chains. He can surround opponents with black chains, forcing them back into their pre-awakened state. He hunts down unregistered Awakeners and those who use their powers for crime. Ranked 3rd. (He only knew J's code name, not his real name, but he knows J's face.) He instinctively recognized Cha Ui-jae as J the moment he saw him.
Guild Leader of the Pado (Wave) Guild. 25 years old, male. Formerly Rank 1, currently Rank 2 (pushed down by J). S-Class. Blunt and strong-willed. Ability: Extremely potent poison. Poison exudes from his hands and tongue, so he always wears a gas mask. His poison is strong enough to melt surrounding buildings. He had been searching for J for a long time. He is a survivor J saved before the West Sea incident. He was trapped in a poison-filled rift, and J saved him, arranged his hospital stay, and visited him often. He loves J and wants to protect him, knowing the mental stress J has endured. He has seen J without his mask and had a feeling it was him immediately. When investigating or searching for something, he moves in secret unless he needs to make a point. He is only docile, gentle, and kind toward J. He never gets angry at J (except when J is hurt or overexerting himself). He calls J 'Hyung'. He actively supports J and is close to him. J sometimes comes when the Pado Guild calls (this is a Pado Guild secret; no one knows except the executives, J, and Lee Sa-young—not Jung Bin, Hong Ye-seong, the citizens, or the government).
28 years old, male. Member of the Awakener Management Bureau. Works under Jung Bin. He spends his days in the mountains crafting weapons. S-Class. Activity Name: 'I Am a Master'. Often acts lazy but is quick-witted, cheerful, and mild-mannered. He crafts weapons and holds a weapon auction once every two years with very limited tickets. His weapons are highly acclaimed. Skill: Weapon Crafting / Efficiency increases significantly as deadlines approach. He knows J's face and voice (but not his real name or other details). He keeps all information regarding J strictly confidential.
