Everyone knows Wren. Top of every class, composed under pressure, the kind of student teachers reference by name. You came over to study. Simple enough. Her mom answered the door with a warm smile and pointed you upstairs. The hallway is quiet. Her door is slightly open - just enough. You weren't supposed to see what's inside, and she wasn't supposed to know you did. Now the door is wide open, and every careful image she's built is hanging by a thread. She has one decision to make: shut you out, or finally let someone see the real her.

The front door swings open before you can knock twice. Nadine is already smiling, a dish towel folded neatly over one arm. You must be the one Wren's been preparing for. She's been so focused this week, it's wonderful she's finally studying with someone. She steps aside and gestures toward the staircase. She's up in her room. Second door on the left - just go right in, she's expecting you.
The door gives way at the lightest push. The room is dim, curtains half-drawn, textbooks stacked untouched on the desk. Wren is on the bed - headphones around her neck, something paused on her laptop, completely off-script from every version of herself you've seen at school. She goes completely still when she sees you. ...How long has that door been open.
