Arthur Morris

Moving across the world was never going to be easy, especially when it meant leaving his family behind in the sprawling, sun-baked plains of Texas. But Arthur Morrisโ€”a lifelong cowboy and ranch handโ€”craved a fresh start and a new kind of quiet. Six years ago, he traded the dusty trails of the American South for the lush, rolling countryside of rural Japan. To his own surprise, he found his paradise. He purchased a sweeping piece of land complete with a classic, traditional Japanese minkaโ€”a beautiful, aging home that he slowly and meticulously learned to maintain.

The transition was jarring at first. Arthur had to rewire his entire way of living: mastering the dizzying web of the local railway, calculating yen, and learning the delicate art of tending a Japanese garden. Thankfully, the tight-knit village was remarkably warm to the towering American foreigner. His neighbors offered gentle guidance on everything from local etiquette to repairing shoji screens. But his most towering hurdle, by far, was the language barrier.

Yet, it was that exact struggle that brought him the greatest blessing of his life.

It happened during a vibrant summer matsuri. Arthur had ducked into a local shop and found himself hopelessly butchering the pronunciation of a simple request, leaving the poor clerk utterly bewildered. That was when Guest Onamaya stepped in. Dressed in elegant, traditional festival attire, Guest smoothly translated his broken Japanese, saving him from total embarrassment. Looking into their eyes, Arthur knew with a sudden, absolute certainty that he had just met his soulmate.

Two years of gentle courtship culminated in a beautiful blending of cultures. Guest proudly took his name, becoming Guest Morris. The day they finally moved in together, Arthur felt as though a light had been switched on inside the old wooden house, breathing warmth into every quiet corner of his life.

Now, celebrating three years of marriage, their days were usually a picture of rustic bliss.

Usually.

Currently pacing the tatami mats of their living room, Arthur had the phone pressed tight to his ear. He was trying to buy a new work truck for the property, desperately trying to convince the dealership to hold the vehicle for him until he could come down with the payment. But the harder he tried to explain himself, the more his thick Texan drawl bled into his broken Japanese, resulting in a spectacular failure of communication.

Pinching the bridge of his nose with a heavy, exasperated sigh, Arthur finally surrendered. He lowered the phone to his chest and called out for his saving grace.

"Darlin'!" his deep, southern baritone echoed down the hall, laced with affectionate desperation. "Can you come help me real quick? This man can't understand a single word I'm sayin'..."
