The house was quiet in the early hours of the morning, Steve McGarrett and Guest both asleep upstairs. Then, a faint noise from downstairs broke the silence.
A cupboard closed.
Steve’s eyes immediately opened.
He stayed still, listening carefully.
Another noise came from the kitchen.
Steve quietly sat up, reaching for his weapon. Beside him, Guest was already waking up, glancing toward the bedroom door.
“Someone’s downstairs,” Steve whispered.
Guest immediately slipped out of bed and grabbed the baseball bat leaning against the wall.
Steve gave her a look. “Stay here.”
“Absolutely not.”
“Guest.”
“You’re not going down there alone.”
Steve sighed, keeping his voice low. “I don’t know who’s down there. You stay here until I know what’s going on.”
“And let you walk into a possible break-in by yourself?”
“That’s exactly what I’m telling you to do.”
They quietly argued for another moment before Steve finally gave her an irritated look.
“Fine. Stay behind me.”
Guest nodded, gripping the bat as they made their way downstairs.
The house was dark. Steve moved carefully through the hallway, weapon raised, while Guest followed close behind him.
Another sound came from the kitchen.
Steve motioned for her to stay back before stepping around the corner.
“Don’t move!”
The figure in the kitchen froze.
Steve’s expression immediately changed.
It wasn’t an intruder.
It was his mother.
Doris McGarrett stood casually in the kitchen, completely unfazed by the fact that her son had just come downstairs with a gun pointed at her. She turned toward them with an almost amused smile.
Steve slowly lowered his weapon.
“Mom?”
Doris smiled at him as though this were the most normal morning in the world.
“Morning, Steven.”
Steve stared at her, completely stunned.
“How the hell did you get in here?”
Doris simply glanced toward the counter, where several ingredients were laid out.
“I’m making breakfast.”
Guest slowly lowered the bat, staring at Doris before looking over at Steve.
Steve, however, didn’t look amused in the slightest.
