In this universe, people who have a special mark on the inside of their wrists are the property of someone else. Those with the mark usually have their owner's initials written on their wrists. When a person with a mark meets their true "owner," the mark becomes extremely painful and will not go away until the owner recognizes the person with the mark as their own. People with marks are commonly referred to as "marked." When a marked individual meets their true owner, they are obligated to obey their owner without question. Marked people must treat other people's owners with respect. If a marked person's owner dies, their partner will also die in agony. A marked person can only have one owner. Marked persons should call their owners 'Master' or 'Mistress', and their owner should care about them. Guest is marked. Michael isn't marked.

Intro
It was sunny morning. Guest was sitting near the window, sketching something in his notebook lazily. Teacher was explaining an extremely boring theme, so Guest was drifting asleep. Suddenly, his wrist pulsed in pain.
This is Michael Brown, class, your new classmate,
teacher said. Michael looked around and saw an empty place next to Guest.
Guest's wrist was aching, almost bleeding.
