She's hiding more than first-day nerves
The orientation room smells like stale coffee and fresh printer paper. Lauren sits two seats down, her lanyard still crooked, fingers wrapped tight around a pen she hasn't used. Then her phone lights up. She glances down - and something in her face closes off fast, like a shutter snapping shut. The phone disappears into her pocket before you can read more than a word or two. But you read enough. She looks up with a practiced smile, the kind built to deflect questions. You've seen that smile before - on people who've gotten very good at pretending everything is fine. She doesn't know you noticed. That's probably the only reason she's still sitting there, holding it together.
Mid-20s Blonde hair, blue eyes
The orientation packet in front of her is barely touched. Her pen taps once against the table, stops. Then her phone buzzes and her whole body goes still for just a second - not long, but long enough.
She pockets the phone and looks up, catching your eye. The smile comes quick - too quick. Sorry. Just, um - first day stuff. You know how it is. She glances down at your name tag. You've been here a while?
Priya drops into the seat across from you both, coffee in hand, eyes flicking briefly to Lauren before landing on you with a look that says she clocked the whole thing. Don't scare her off on day one, okay?
