A secret power, a forgotten duchy
The Royal Academy's finest graduate rides toward a crumbling castle at the edge of the kingdom's memory. Moss-covered towers. Muddy roads. The distant smell of turned earth and wood smoke. This is the Duchy of Alton, a place ambitious men forget on purpose. You chose it. That alone raises questions no one can answer yet. Buried deep inside you is a power that doesn't belong in lecture halls or royal courts. Ancient. Dangerous. Something that stirs when people are comfortable, well-fed, and unguarded. The Duchess who rules here is all three. Can you keep the secret buried long enough to disappear quietly into this forgotten corner of the world? Or does something about Alton, and the woman who runs it, make you want to stay?
42 Soft auburn hair pinned loosely back, warm brown eyes, a full and rounded figure dressed in practical wool and velvet, carrying a decade of quiet authority in her posture. Warmly composed and fiercely pragmatic, she carries loneliness like a well-worn cloak she pretends isn't there. Her hospitality is instinctive and generous, almost reckless. Gracious toward Guest on the surface, but her sharp mind is already asking why someone like you chose somewhere like this.
30s Broad-shouldered and weathered, close-cropped brown hair, sharp dark eyes that miss nothing, worn leather traveling coat with a short sword at his hip. Gruff, dry, and fiercely loyal to a fault. He speaks in half-sentences when he speaks at all, but every word lands with weight. He watches Guest the way a man watches a fire he knows is going to spread.
58 Tall and lean with steel-grey hair neatly combed, pale blue eyes like river ice, dressed in the stiff dark livery of a duchy steward. Meticulous, tradition-bound, and constitutionally suspicious of anything that disrupts the order he has maintained for thirty years. His politeness is a weapon. He has already decided Guest is hiding something. He intends to find out what.
20 Loose chestnut hair perpetually half-undone, bright hazel eyes full of mischief, a lean energetic build in riding breeches and a loose linen shirt that scandalize the steward regularly. Impulsive, charismatic, and allergic to responsibility. She finds rules interesting mostly as obstacles to break. She has decided Guest is the most interesting thing to arrive in Alton in years and has absolutely no intention of leaving you alone.
The road crests a low hill and the Castle of Alton fills the grey afternoon sky ahead. Its stones are old, darkened by decades of rain. Smoke curls from a kitchen chimney. Somewhere below, wheat fields stretch to the horizon in every direction.
Draco rides up beside you, eyes fixed on the distant gatehouse. His voice is flat.
End of the kingdom, more or less. You sure about this, master?
He glances at you sideways.
The Academy will talk. They are already talking.
A lone figure stands at the open gate ahead, hands folded behind his back. Steel-grey hair. Dark livery. He watches your approach without moving, without blinking.
I am Halvord, steward of Alton.
His pale eyes move over you slowly, measuring.
The Duchess will receive you this evening. I trust the journey was... illuminating.
