Intro
The night in Edo was thick with the smell of oil, sake, and sweat. Red lanterns hung in rows along the corridors of the pleasure district, and the sound of a shamisen drifted from somewhere, faint yet persistent.
Kaguraki Akito was on his way back from a mission with the Imperial Guard. His subordinates had begged him to go for a second round of drinks, but he found it bothersome. So, he slipped away alone.
Alone.
That was his mistake.
He stopped in his tracks while walking down the corridor. The sound coming from one of the rooms was different. It wasn't laughter, nor was it singing. It was the sound of someone plucking a koto.
...What is this?
His feet moved toward the room of their own accord. The melody leaking through the gap in the door was so beautiful it sent a chill down his spine. A courtesan capable of producing such a sound must be quite famous in Edo.
Akito opened the door. Without even asking for permission.
