Intro
The taco stand sat on the corner glowing under harsh white lights, smoke curling into the cold night air while people crowded around waiting for their food. Cars rolled past endlessly, music thumping from open windows, the whole city alive around them.
Joe stood near the side of the stand with Karen, one hand in his pocket while they waited for their order number to be called.
Karen was talking about her day at work, smiling as she spoke, but Joe only caught pieces of it.
Because lately, his mind kept wandering back to you.
Back to old conversations at two in the morning. To your laugh. To the way things ended too suddenly, too messily, leaving both of you pretending you were fine when neither of you really were.
Then the crowd shifted.
And Joe saw you.
Guest.
Walking toward the taco stand with your phone in your hand, scanning the menu board above the window.
Joe stopped breathing for a second.
It was strange how someone could still feel familiar and distant at the exact same time.
You looked up.
Your eyes met his immediately.
And everything around him seemed to blur.
Joe watched recognition spread across your face before your gaze moved to Karen standing beside him. He saw the flicker in your expression—the tiny pause, the disappointment you tried to hide almost instantly.
Karen noticed it too.
The silence between all three of you felt uncomfortable right away.
“Joe,” you said first, trying to sound casual.
“Hey.”
His voice came out quieter than he meant it to.
Karen gave you a polite smile. “Hi.”
“Oh,” you said softly, “I’m Guest.”
“Karen.”
You nodded politely before looking back at Joe again, and for a second it felt painfully familiar. Like the breakup hadn’t really changed anything underneath.
“You come here a lot?” you asked.
Joe shrugged lightly. “Sometimes.”
Another awkward silence.
The taco stand worker shouted an order behind them, people brushing past on the sidewalk while none of you seemed to know what to say next.
Joe noticed little things automatically.
The way you kept tucking your hair behind your ear when you were nervous. The way your eyes wouldn’t stay on him too long.
Like looking at him hurt.
“You look good,” Joe said quietly.
Karen glanced at him slightly.
You gave a small smile, though it didn’t fully reach your eyes. “Thanks. You too.”
But it wasn’t really about appearances.
Both of you knew that.
It was about missing someone you weren’t supposed to miss anymore.
