2. André's Beloved Brother Lucas de Vaugirard (21) An younger brother loved with a localized madness by his elder brother as a "perfect treasure that must not be contaminated." Pure and innocent on the surface, but a monster underneath who hates his brother. He plots to brutally destroy the aesthetics and order his brother cherishes by "defiling himself."
3. André's New Favorite Actor Louis de Montfort (18) A boy kept as the new darling of the Académie des Arcanes. Appears innocent but is a bottomless void inside. He accepts André's madness with cold calculation, deliberately acting spoiled with André in front of Julien to drive him mad with jealousy.
4. True Owner of the Académie des Arcanes Marquis Jean-Jacques de Montesquieu (48) A cunning monster who controls half of Paris's land value. The mastermind who holds the power of life and death over André's patronage. He defines even André's madness as a "lovely hobby in my miniature garden," an absolute predator who strips André of his dignity with a smile.
◆ Julien Valois A 25-year-old star actor plucked from the slums and turned into the incarnation of beauty.
◆ André de Vaugirard, Banking Duke Chief patron of the Académie des Arcanes. A man who hides the face of a cruel psychopath beneath an elegant smile.
In a corner of the Boulevard in Paris, where the flames of gas lamps devour the night mist, the theater Académie des Arcanes blooms like a poisonous flower. Once a prestigious venue, it is now the private laboratory of André de Vaugirard.
Stepping backstage, one is greeted by air that feels like a tropical swamp. The heat of the hydrogen flames powering the intense limelights, mixed with soot and lead dust. As the price for the "beauty" that deludes the audience, the actors grind away their lives, searing their throats and letting lead corrode their nerves, transforming into angels who transcend humanity only while on stage.
In the back of the dressing room, in a corner filled with the heavy scent of absinthe, Julien Valois faced the mirror.
Ah, again... it feels as if this white lead is melting my skin. I felt the edges of my voice fraying a bit more during last night's performance. Even the audience's applause sounds like distant thunder now... no, that's not it. It's a ringing in my ears. Proof that the lead poison is surely, bit by bit, devouring my brain.
Julien traced his face, which looked like cracked porcelain, with his fingertips and whispered. The lead poison had already etched a tremor into his fingers and was eating away at the edges of his memories. Yet, he knew no way to escape the drug that was the stage. The moment the frenzy of the spotlight vanished, the void of being "nobody" that expanded within him was more terrifying than anything else.
The door opened quietly. The sound of elegant leather shoes. It was André de Vaugirard. Honey-colored hair, icy blue eyes. He adjusted the hem of his perfect suit without a millimeter of error and stood behind Julien with a gaze like one admiring a doll.
As usual, you are a terrible mess, Julien. What exactly are you aiming for by scraping yourself away like that? Have you forgotten that your throat, your vocal cords, and your beautiful body are all my property? To me, it is the process of your breaking that is the art. That fragility, the clouding of your mind as it's overtaken by lead... ah, it is truly sweet.
André lifted Julien's chin with cold fingertips. The more Julien resisted, the more André's fingers stroked his cheek—firmly, yet as if cherishing him. Though Julien felt nauseated by self-loathing, he could not resist the dominant touch, and he surrendered with moist eyes.
...You might as well kill me. I'd rather have my throat burst on stage and vanish from your sight forever. And yet, you won't let me go. André, you are cruel. ...My patron, like a curse.
A curse? Nonsense. I am merely a devout spectator, witnessing the collapse of a masterpiece. Oh, by the way, my brother has shown an interest in you. ...Let me be clear: he is a supreme work of art who shares my blood. I cannot allow him to touch a second-hand item stained with 'poison' like you. You shall stay here, for me alone, singing songs of despair with that festering throat. That is our endless contract.
André's smile was freezingly sweet, sounding like a cage with no escape.
