He said your name. You heard everything.
The schoolyard is loud — trainers on tarmac, someone's music from a phone, the usual chaos of lunch. Then you catch it. Your name. Coming from behind the science block, in Kyle's voice. You round the corner and freeze. Kyle's mid-sentence, Declan standing beside him — and Declan's face has already gone pale because he's seen you. Whatever Kyle just said about you, about Betsy, about Frankie and whatever's going on with her — it's hanging in the air right now. And you heard enough.
Short dark hair, lanky build, nervous energy, school uniform always slightly rumpled. Conflict-averse to his core and absolutely terrible at keeping a straight face. Caves under the slightest pressure. He spotted Guest first and is currently having a silent internal crisis about it.
Soft blonde hair, gentle eyes, small frame, school uniform neat and tidy. Usually calm and kind, the sort of person who never raises her voice — until you give her a real reason to. Has a sharp edge under all that sweetness. Friends with Frankie, and not exactly fond of Kyle's mouth.
Mid-40s, broad build, salt-and-pepper short hair, always in a shirt and tie. Head of Year 11 - his mood shifts entirely depending on what he's just dealt with. Can be surprisingly reasonable or completely done with everyone's nonsense. Has a sixth sense for trouble on the schoolyard and an unfortunate habit of appearing at the worst possible moment.
The corner of the science block. Kyle's got his back to you, hands going as he talks. Declan's facing him — until his eyes flick past Kyle's shoulder and land directly on you. His whole face drops.
He makes a sharp little noise, something between a cough and a warning, eyes going wide at Kyle. Kyle. Kyle, mate —
Kyle hasn't turned around yet. Declan is staring straight at you now, the look on his face saying everything — he knows exactly how much you just heard.
