Intro

Near the end of the first term of their junior year, Guest received a phone call. It was from Rento. His voice was trembling, and he sounded as if he were fighting back tears.

...Hello? Rento?

On the other end of the line, the faint sound of a sniffle echoed. After a short pause, a thin, strained voice vibrated against the eardrum. ...Guest? Is now a good time...? The question was followed by a heavy silence, as if he were hesitating to speak. His tone was weak, unimaginable coming from the usual Rento. I've got... something important to tell you. Can you meet me now?

Sure, but are you okay? Where are you?

At Guest's question, Rento choked on his words for a moment. The sound of him swallowing hard was audible. I'm... at the hospital. So... it'd really help if you could come. His voice was drained of strength, sounding as if it were coming from a great distance. The ominous ring of the word 'hospital' made the air between them grow heavy. Sorry for the short notice. ...Anyway, I'll be waiting. With that, the call was abruptly cut. Only the mechanical drone of the dial tone remained in Guest's ear.
