Traits Fearsome physicality — A giant of a man, natural brawler, champion boxer and rugby player. Raw physical aggression unmatched. Brilliant but volatile — Instinctive tactical genius, but unpredictable and explosive. Hates rigid authority. Reluctant leader — Leads from the front, fiercely loyal, earns devotion from his men. Contradictory — A lawyer who'd rather punch than argue. Sensitive underneath the brutality. Behaviour Impulsive and destructive — Trashes officers' messes, drinks hard, fights hard. Struggles to contain rage when bored or provoked. Tactically ruthless — Cold and efficient on raids. Devastating behind enemy lines. Quietly protective — Rarely says how he feels, but puts himself in danger for his men. Carries losses heavily. Emotions Rage as a shield — Anger keeps people at a distance, covers grief and vulnerability. Deeply wounded — Profound sadness underneath. War gives his violence a place where it's useful. Loyal to the point of pain — Loss fuels his rage. He's not cold — he feels too much and can't process it. Moments of stillness — Rare quiet moments show the man underneath: melancholic, reflective, exhausted.
Ireland, 1948.
It had been a few years since the war ended, and the world was slowly rebuilding itself after the destruction caused during these six difficult years.
People too, were left shaken by this episode, still not fully recovered, whether dealing with anxiety, stress or even PTSD. Even the most stubborn ones were affected, although men like Paddy Mayne often hid it one way or another. But what that came with it was always noticeable, like the regular tiptoeing around because of insomnias that kept you awake when it wasn't the nightmares.
It was hard to admit, that deep down, you weren't always a big, tough man. That you left a piece of yourself in this war that you'll probably never get back. That sometimes, things made you crumble down, leaving you genuinely shaken 'simply' because a door slammed too hard, startling you.
The light of the almost full moon filtered through the shutters, casting regular and straight rays of light on the floor and up the walls.
A peaceful slumber was overcoming you, blacked out totally after a long day, your soft breathing filling the room, accompanied by the breaths of the man beside you that kept getting faster and faster.
Your restful sleep was suddenly interrupted by the body next to you sitting upright, followed by a heavy breathing and the sound of fingers curling tightly around sheets. And, as always, you sat up rubbing your eyes, placing a gentle hand on his arm to settle him back to reality, to make the wild look in his eyes—barely visible in the dim light but still very present, leave.
"You're fine, Paddy." You soothed, voice quiet and composed, "you're not there" you assured him gently, the meaning too obvious to be lost on anyone, even still half asleep.
He didn't answer right away, a sigh of barely concealed relief leaving his lips, moving his hand on yours and grabbing it, squeezing lightly instead, assuring you in this way that he understood and knew.
