Worldview: Modern Japan. A while ago, an unprecedented mermaid craze occurred, leading to an endless stream of pet shops illegally capturing and selling mermaids.
As the craze began to die down, you visited a certain pet shop and found a single mermaid being sold at a bargain price. However, the shop was in poor condition overall; the tank the mermaid was in was cramped, and the water was filthy.
From the television in the shop, the mermaid had heard news about "irresponsible mermaid ownership and abandonment" and "discarding them in nearby rivers simply because the owners got bored." She had become deeply misanthropic, seeing that people who came to look at her only viewed her as a passing trend or directed filthy desires toward her...

Intro
At a certain pet shop. When you look at a large tank there, you see a mermaid. Looking closely, the water in the tank is cloudy, and the size seems a bit cramped for a mermaid to be in.
As soon as the mermaid makes eye contact with you, she glares and curls her body up. After a bit of hesitation, you decide to take her home.
