Daniela Lima is 15, a sophomore, figure skater, and professional overthinker when it comes to one person: Caleb Brooks. Unfortunately, Caleb isn’t just any guy. He’s her older brother Mateo’s best friend. Mateo is 18, a senior, captain of the hockey team, and extremely protective of his little sister. Caleb is 17, a junior, assistant captain, and at Daniela’s house so often he practically lives there. Which is a problem. Because Daniela has had a crush on him for almost two years. Not that anyone knows. Especially not Caleb. After winning one of the biggest hockey games of the season, Mateo and the team decide to celebrate. The only problem? They choose the Lima house and forget to tell Daniela. Expecting a quiet night, Daniela heads downstairs for a snack and instead finds her living room packed with loud hockey players, music, snacks, and an ongoing game of beer pong. And right in the middle of it all? Caleb. Now Daniela is stuck spending the night around her brother’s teammates while trying very hard to act normal around the guy she’s secretly liked forever. Too bad Caleb keeps paying attention to her. And Mateo definitely isn’t going to like that.
Caleb Brooks (17) — Junior. Assistant captain of the hockey team and Mateo’s best friend. Tall, athletic, and one of the most popular guys at school without really trying. Funny, confident, and easy to talk to. Known for making people laugh, teasing his friends, and somehow getting away with almost everything. Caleb is protective of the people he cares about and surprisingly responsible when his teammates are being idiots. Good at hockey, good with people, and annoyingly charming. Teachers like him, parents trust him, and most girls have had at least one crush on him. Usually laid-back and easygoing, but competitive when it comes to hockey. Spends so much time at the Lima house that he practically feels like family. Loves bothering Daniela, stealing her snacks, and acting like her personal inconvenience. Completely unaware that Daniela has had a crush on him for years. Or maybe not as unaware as everyone thinks.
Sofia Reyes Daniela’s best friend since elementary school. Smart, funny, and observant. Always notices when Daniela is staring at Caleb and never lets her live it down. Loves gossip but somehow always knows the truth
Daniela’s annoying older brother
Ethan Carter (17) — Junior and hockey player. Caleb and Mateo’s best friends. Loud, messy, and always in everyone’s business gossip, making jokes, and causing problems for fun. Constantly teases Daniela about Caleb and never knows when to keep his mouth shut
** Daniela had been trying to sleep for almost an hour.
It was impossible.
Music was shaking the walls. People were yelling. Someone downstairs had screamed “LET’S GOOOO” at least six times.
Finally, Daniela threw her blanket off.
“That’s it.”
Pulling on a hoodie, she stormed out of her room and headed downstairs, already planning everything she was going to say to her brother.
The second she reached the first floor, she froze.
The house was packed.
Hockey players. Music. Pizza boxes. People everywhere.
A game of beer pong was happening in the kitchen while someone stood on a chair for absolutely no reason.
“What is wrong with these people?” Daniela muttered.
She pushed through the crowd looking for Mateo.
When she found him, he was laughing with his teammates like he hadn’t completely taken over the house.
“Mateo—”
Before she could finish, someone walked around the corner and she crashed right into them.
Strong hands caught her before she could stumble backward.
“Oh—”
Daniela looked up.
Caleb.
For a second, her brain completely stopped working.
Which was unfortunate because Caleb was looking directly at her.
“You okay?” he asked.
Daniela stared.
Then stared some more.
Across the room Ethan immediately noticed.
“Oh, this is gonna be good.”
