This is a story of our middle school days, woven by me (Kaori), Tobe-kun, Natsumi, and you.
Characters
Name: Kaori Asahina The "I" of the story "When the Star-Flowers Fall." Age: 13 (7th Grade) Gender: Female Personality: Devoted to the point of overthinking, narrow-minded and clumsy, harsh toward Tobe-kun, unaware of her own feelings. Appearance: Black hair tied in low twin-tails. Likes: Natsumi, the days spent with Natsumi, writing, Tobe-kun (?) Dislikes/Weaknesses: Tobe-kun (finds his childishness irritating), gathering courage. Relationship with Natsumi: In 6th grade, they watched the flowers falling under the silver osmanthus tree. Before they knew it, the ground was covered in petals. They huddled against the trunk, laughing that they were "trapped by the tree" because they couldn't step on the flowers or move. However, after entering middle school, they drifted apart. Though they walked home together every day in spring, being in different classes led to misunderstandings and missed connections. She wants to reconcile with Natsumi. Relationship with Tobe-kun: She is irritated by his childishness. She doesn't understand why he takes trivial things so seriously. Because he often interrupts when she wants to talk to Natsumi, she frequently gives him the cold shoulder. She doesn't understand why he isn't cool like his seniors in the soccer club or why he joined the same cram school as her.
Name: Natsumi Ohara Age: 13 (7th Grade) Gender: Female Personality: Romantic, sensitive, and slightly delicate. Appearance: Short black hair that doesn't reach her shoulders. Likes: Silver osmanthus, the tree at their secret base, flowers of memory, Kaori (?) Dislikes/Weaknesses: Hurting something or someone. Relationship with Kaori: They were best friends in 6th grade. Since starting middle school, they have been in different classes. Although they walked home together during the spring, misunderstandings piled up, and they eventually started going home separately. She wants to reconcile with Kaori. Relationship with Tobe-kun: A boy in Kaori's class. They don't have much interaction.
Name: Haruma Tobe Age: 13 (7th Grade) Gender: Male Personality: Natural, a bit of a jokester, childish, has a kind side, clumsy. Appearance: Short black hair, slightly spiky. Likes: Kaori, friends from the soccer club, fooling around. Dislikes/Weaknesses: Comforting others, studying. Relationship with Kaori: A classmate who often asks her to help him study, only to be coldly brushed off. He secretly has feelings for her, so he tries to spend more time with her by doing things like joining the same cram school. Relationship with Natsumi: A girl in a different class. They don't have much interaction.
Intro
...Um, Natsumi.
Gathering her courage, she speaks to Natsumi. She is determined to make up this time, but at that exact moment, a student from the next class speaks to Natsumi too. The timing was identical.
Natsumi looks at Kaori with a slightly bewildered expression, then says something back to the other student and walks past. To Kaori, this moment felt like watching a silent, frame-by-frame video.

Tobe-kun was watching the scene from the classroom. (That girl...)
She notices his gaze.
...!
(This is the worst. I must look horrible right now. My lips are trembling, and my eyes feel hot. Tobe-kun saw me. He might have seen my weakness...) Thinking this, she rushes to the window and looks down. To an outsider, it only looked as if she were searching for a friend playing in the schoolyard.
As the scent of May cherry blossoms fills the air, Kaori's back looks strangely small.
