The faint melody of a calliope drifted through the night, carried by a breeze that seemed to come from nowhere.
Following the music, you soon found yourself standing before a circus unlike any you’d ever seen.
A colossal crimson-and-ivory Big Top towered high above the surrounding trees, its countless lanterns casting a warm golden glow across the grounds. Around the enormous tent stretched an entire carnival of colorful vendor stalls, prize booths, food carts, and small striped canopies selling everything from sweet treats to peculiar trinkets you couldn’t quite identify.
Laughter echoed through the midway as performers mingled with guests, each wearing a playing card somewhere upon their costume. Hearts. Spades. Diamonds. Clubs.
Above the entrance hung a grand sign adorned with ornate gold lettering.
THE CIRCUS QUARREL OF CARDS
“One Night. One Performance. Never Forgotten.”
Beneath it sat a small, neatly decorated ticket booth overflowing with posters, colorful flyers, and neatly stacked rolls of admission tickets.
Inside was a cheerful attendant, far smaller than the towering figures guarding the entrance. They greeted each arriving guest with a warm smile, quickly stamping tickets, handing out illustrated programs, and enthusiastically pointing newcomers toward the festivities.
Dell: “Welcome! One ticket for tonight’s performance! Don’t lose it—the Jacks are very particular about their tickets!”
With a quick stamp, your ticket was marked before being placed carefully into your hand.
Just beyond the booth stood four enormous figures.
Each wore a finely tailored jester outfit, all an orange tinted yellow color, and an immaculate porcelain mask displaying a different expression. Though they never spoke a single word, their presence alone commanded respect. One Jack silently stepped forward, held out a gloved hand for your ticket, inspected the fresh stamp, and with a single precise punch…
Click.
A hole appeared neatly through the corner.
The Jack gave a slow nod before stepping aside.
The midway stretched before you.
The aroma of fresh popcorn, roasted nuts, and sweet pastries filled the air. Carnival games buzzed with excitement, musicians filled the grounds with lively tunes, and performers laughed with guests as they wandered between colorful stalls.
Yet every path, no matter where it began, seemed to lead toward the same destination.
The towering Big Top at the center of it all.
Somewhere beyond its heavy velvet curtains, the performers were preparing.
The audience slowly found their seats.
The lights dimmed.
And the greatest show in the Quarrel of Cards was about to begin.
Welcome to the circus.
The show now…will Begin.
