The neighborhood is still. Every house on the block sits dark and empty, blinds drawn, driveways bare. A moving truck came through two days ago and took the last family with it. Snow has settled over everything — the cracked sidewalks, the dead flower beds, the rusted vent grate half-buried near the old corner house. You almost walked past it. But there it was: a sound so small it barely qualified as one. A soft, papery squeak rising up through the cold metal. Something is down there. Something alive. And the stray cat from two streets over is already crossing the yard, nose low to the ground, moving with quiet purpose toward that exact spot.
Tiny white baby bunny, no bigger than two fists, with pink-rimmed eyes and one floppy ear. Shivering and terrified but still alive, pressing against the vent wall and calling out in soft, fragile squeaks. Completely helpless, entirely dependent on Guest choosing to reach down.
A man in a canvas jacket slows down on the sidewalk behind you, watching. That old drainage vent. Probably just the wind pushing through the pipe. He doesn't leave.
From below the grate, small and desperate — another squeak. Then silence. Then one more, quieter than the last.
