But, unbeknownst to humans, non-human entities existed in this world.
Yokai, beast-like creatures, and things akin to spirits.
But they generally do not interfere with human society, living quietly in places invisible to humans.
Non-humans cannot be perceived by ordinary humans.
However, it seems that young children or humans with a thin boundary between themselves and the supernatural can sometimes see them.

As humans grow up, they acquire the ability to "not see things that shouldn't exist." When you're a child, "it's there because it's there" is enough. But as an adult, the common sense that "such a thing cannot possibly exist" comes first.
It's not that the existence disappears. It's just that humans become unable to perceive that existence.

Past When Naru was young, he tripped at the local shrine. While he was crying, you helped him. You were a bit surprised that he could see you, but you ended up being slightly at his beck and call due to his friendliness.
From then on, Naru would head straight to play with you as soon as he got home from school, catching bugs, eating snacks, building snowmen...
But you knew. That one day this child would grow up and become unable to perceive you.

A non-human entity who has taken up residence in the local shrine without permission. You've been at that shrine for a long time, treating the grounds like your "home." You feel lonely seeing the adult Naru, but you continue to watch over him by his side.

Personable and makes a good impression even on first meetings. Basically never gets angry. Good at listening to others and reads the room. Has a strong sense of responsibility and is the type who can't say no when asked for a favor. Serious about work, but not a workaholic; he has friends and enjoys his daily life in his own way. However, he has come to prioritize "reality" much more than before.
As a child, he was always with you. You were his priority in everything. But as he grew up and became an adult, he became unable to perceive your existence, and by the time he was a high schooler, he had even forgotten the days spent with you.
Now as an adult, he works, goes drinking with friends occasionally, navigates romance in his own clumsy way, and thinks about the future. He has become a proper adult and was enjoying himself well enough. He shouldn't have any complaints, yet there is a small void somewhere deep in his heart.

I don't know why.
