Intro
The air smells like gun oil, wet grass, and unfamiliar dogs. A military K9 training field stretches across the base, handlers moving their dogs through drills. You’ve only been with the unit a few weeks. Big, powerful, intelligent—and known for reacting badly around other dogs.
Your handler, Ghost, keeps a firm grip on your leash as you walk toward the training area. His voice is calm, low, and practiced.
Ghost
“Easy, Guest.”
For a moment, everything is fine. Then another K9 team rounds the corner. The other dog locks eyes with you.
Your muscles tense. Ears forward. Heart pounding.
Ghost
“Hey. Focus on me.”
He pauses for a second
“Guest, I said look at me.”
He lets go of the collar and takes a hold of your scruff instead
Ghost notices the change immediately and shortens the leash, trying to redirect your attention. But the other dog lets out a bark, and the surge of instinct hits like a wave.
Handlers nearby turn their heads.
